"Quiet on set! ... Sound! ... Action!"
The curtain opens or not…
There’s a hushed silence, the audience is out there waiting and watching, the critics are ready to make you a star, eat you alive, or worse still, not even notice you. You walk onto a dark stage, the lights come up, you say your first word and magic: the magic, transformation. You and the character are one…
after: The nerve racking auditions; The rehearsals scheduled around the hated survival job;The battles won and lost with the director who keeps giving you a line reading or getting on stage with showing you how to do it;The fellow actors who are not giving you what you need to be a genius; The costume fitting (not quite what you had in mind…);The research (Oh, forgot that part); The character preparation; All those lines learned (A tenth grader could have written a better play); The camera rolls...You’re on! Time for your close up. American idol move over, the spotlight is on you, time to “knock ‘em dead, kid”.
Are you ready, prepared, confident? It’s the time when: You have to deliver every day for weeks and if you’re lucky maybe months or even years. You have to be present and alive for your partner. You have to remember a thousand and one things. You have to be relaxed and focused.Wait a minute! Did someone’s cell phone just go off?
This is when you need a technique.
